Prompting is not the skill. Setup is.
Every fix below is already in your Plus plan. None of it requires an upgrade, a prompt library, or somebody's free PDF.
## stop
Three prompts that guarantee a mediocre answer.
"Write me a LinkedIn post about AI."
No context.You gave it nothing, so you got the statistical average of the internet. Everyone else got it too.
"Act as a world-class copywriter with 20 years of experience who studied under..."
Role-play is not context.It still has no idea who you are, what you ship, or what you'd reject. A costume is not a brief.
"Make it punchier."→ "No, more professional."→ "Try a different tone."
You can't describe what you want.So it keeps guessing. Twelve rewrites later you are back at draft one.
## setup
Do this once, in order. All of it is included at the Plus tier.
01Custom Instructions are for preferences only. Tone, format, hard nos. Three lines, not your life story.
02Turn on Connectors: Gmail and Google Drive. Stop describing an email it could just read.
03On Plus, Projects are your Skills. One Project per recurring job, with its own instructions, files, and memory.
04Write the Project instructions like a job spec: what it's for, your voice, the output format, and what to reject.
05Upload reference files into the Project once. Every chat inside it inherits them. No more re-uploading.
06Build a Custom GPT only when you need to share it or attach Actions. Otherwise a Project is less work.
07Codex is already in your Plus plan. Install the CLI or IDE extension. Most Plus users never open it.
08Codex is where real skills live: a folder with a SKILL.md in ~/.codex/skills. Name and description in the frontmatter.
09Restart Codex after installing one, then call it with $skill-name or let a sharp description trigger it.
10Run /init in the repo. Persistent rules go in AGENTS.md. Keep it short: it competes with your code for context.
11Keep exactly one prompting trick: "Don't start yet. Ask me questions until you can't get this wrong."
12Instant for everyday work, Thinking when it's actually hard. Plus has usage caps. Don't spend them on typo fixes.

Signs you're still working like it's 2025. No particular order.
!Your prompt opens with "Act as a world-class..."
!You re-upload the same three reference files every session.
!You hit the upload cap by lunch, entirely from re-uploading.
!You paste an about-me document in by hand.
!Twelve chat tabs open, zero Projects.
!You went looking for the Skills tab. It isn't on Plus. Use a Project.
!You're paying for Codex every month and have never opened it.
!You built a Custom GPT nobody else uses. That was a Project.
!You dump a whole folder into context, then wonder why it loops.
!You copy prompts off LinkedIn. They are not your voice.
!You re-explain your tone every single time.
!Connectors are off, so it can't see the thing you're asking about.
!You're about to upgrade to fix a problem your settings caused.
What Plus does not get, and what nobody tells you
ChatGPT Skills launched in July 2026 for Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu. Not Free, not Plus, not Pro. Anyone telling you to "just make it a Skill" is describing a plan you don't have. On Plus the equivalent is a Project, and it costs you nothing extra. Check model names before you repeat them, too: OpenAI ships GPT-5.6 Sol, Terra, and Luna, with GPT-5.5 Instant as the everyday default.
Prompting isn't dead. It got shorter. The work moved into the context it lands in.
